7 Unusual Things To Do In Victoria BC

If you’re hunting for unusual things to do in Victoria BC, you’ll be happy to know this city has more up its sleeve than just postcard views and world-famous gardens. Tucked between ocean breezes and historic streets are quirky little adventures that feel like best-kept secrets — the kind locals love to share once you’ve earned their trust.

unusual things to do in Victoria BC - Hatley Castle

From whimsical miniature worlds to moss-covered sculptures hiding in the park, these unexpected finds turn an ordinary day into a story worth retelling. Whether you’re planning a staycation or showing off the city to out-of-town guests, you’ll discover that Victoria’s playful side is full of surprises waiting just around the corner.

1) Miniature World

We discovered a charming escape from Victoria’s rainy days at Miniature World on Humboldt Street. This unique museum transforms you into a giant as you explore incredibly detailed miniature displays.

The exhibits take you on a journey through time and imagination. We wandered through tiny European castles, watched the miniature Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace, and explored a futuristic space scene set in 2201 AD.

Each display features special lighting and sound effects that bring the tiny worlds to life. The craftsmanship is remarkable – from Olde London Towne of 1670 to Fantasy Land, every detail is perfectly scaled down.

It’s the perfect indoor activity when Victoria’s coastal weather keeps you inside. Both kids and adults will find themselves captivated by these miniature masterpieces.

2) Hatley Castle

We love exploring this stunning early-1900s mansion that feels like stepping into a fairy tale. The castle sits beautifully on the grounds of Royal Roads University, surrounded by formal gardens that take your breath away.

When we visited, we were amazed by the impressive stone exterior and learned it was built for James Dunsmuir, who famously said “Money doesn’t matter, just build what I want.” The building stretches 200 feet long with an 82-foot-high turret that dominates the landscape.

Inside, we found gorgeous oak and rosewood panelled rooms, plus a baronial fireplace that makes you feel like royalty. The castle has quite a history too – it served as a naval training facility during World War II before becoming part of the university.

The gardens around the castle are perfect for a peaceful walk. We especially enjoyed strolling through the formal landscaping designed by Boston artists back in 1908. It’s a wonderful spot to escape Victoria’s busy pace and enjoy some quiet time outdoors.

3) Victoria Bug Zoo

We discovered this hidden gem right in downtown Victoria, and it completely changed how we think about creepy crawlies. The Bug Zoo houses around 50 fascinating species from tropical locations around the world.

What makes this place special is the hands-on experience. We got to hold stick bugs, millipedes, and even some beetles while knowledgeable guides shared amazing facts about each creature. The staff’s enthusiasm is infectious, and they make everyone feel comfortable, even if you’re squeamish about bugs.

The zoo features glow-in-the-dark scorpions, beautiful praying mantises, hairy tarantulas, and Canada’s largest ant colony. We were amazed by how organized everything was, with ant displays along the walls and clear viewing areas for all the exhibits.

This mini zoo is perfect for families with curious kids. The guides offer continuous tours and share age-appropriate information that keeps everyone engaged. We even witnessed some rare moments, like watching insects molt or give birth.

4) The Moss Lady

We discovered this charming living sculpture tucked away on Douglas Street, where nature and art come together in the most delightful way. The Moss Lady sits peacefully in her garden setting, covered in real moss and plants that change with Victoria’s seasons.

What makes her special is how she blends into the coastal landscape we all know so well. During our rainy winters, she looks particularly vibrant as the moss grows lush and green. In summer, different plants take root and create new textures across her surface.

The sculpture feels perfectly at home in Victoria’s climate. She’s a reminder of how our coastal air and frequent rains create the perfect conditions for moss to thrive everywhere – including on this artistic figure.

We love how this quiet attraction gives us a moment to pause and appreciate the unique beauty of our West Coast environment. It’s a quick stop that connects us to Victoria’s artistic spirit and natural charm.

5) Ogden Point Sundial

We stumbled upon this clever piece of public art while walking along the Dallas Road waterfront. The Ogden Point Sundial turns visitors into part of the timepiece itself.

You become the gnomon when you step onto the 18-foot wide sundial. Your shadow points to the time on this interactive attraction. It’s a fun way to teach kids about how sundials work while getting some fresh coastal air.

The sundial sits right on the pathway near Ogden Point, making it easy to find during a seaside stroll. We love how it combines art, science, and Victoria’s beautiful waterfront setting. It only takes a few minutes to experience, but it’s surprisingly engaging.

The best time to visit is on sunny days when your shadow shows up clearly. Since Victoria gets plenty of rainy weather, catch it when the sun’s out for the full effect.

6) Abkhazi Garden

We discovered this hidden gem tucked away on Fairfield Road, and it feels like stepping into a secret world. The 1.4-acre garden sits on sloping land with stunning views that make you forget you’re still in the city.

The rhododendrons bloom beautifully in spring, creating bursts of colour against the native rock formations. We loved wandering the winding paths that lead to quiet ponds and peaceful corners perfect for reflection.

The teahouse adds a special touch to any visit. We found it’s the perfect spot to sit with a warm drink and take in the garden’s serene atmosphere, especially on those typical Victoria rainy days.

What makes this place truly unusual is its romantic history and intimate scale. Unlike larger botanical gardens, this feels more like visiting someone’s beloved private sanctuary that’s been lovingly tended for decades.

7) Beacon Hill Children’s Farm

We love bringing our families to this charming little farm right in the heart of Victoria. Tucked inside Beacon Hill Park, it’s like finding a countryside escape without leaving the city.

The farm houses friendly goats, sheep, chickens, and other gentle animals that kids can meet up close. We’ve watched our little ones light up when they pet a fluffy sheep or feed the goats. The animals are well-cared for and used to children, making it a perfect first farm experience.

Story time happens Thursday mornings at 10:30am when weather permits. We’ve enjoyed listening to farm-themed stories while surrounded by the actual animals from the tales. It’s a sweet way to combine learning with hands-on fun.

The best part is how affordable and accessible this gem is for Victoria families. The Koenders family has run this spot since 1985, and their passion for helping children connect with animals really shows.

How To Prepare Your Home For Guests After Outdoor Adventures

After a day exploring Victoria’s trails or beaches, your guests will appreciate coming back to a clean, comfortable space. The key is managing muddy gear at the door and clearing away that persistent coastal moisture that clings to everything.

Quick Entryway Refresh For Muddy Shoes

We know how Victoria’s outdoor adventures can leave boots caked with mud from Goldstream Park or sand from Willows Beach. The trick is creating a system that keeps the mess contained right at your front door.

cozy mudroom in a coastal home

Set up a boot station with a waterproof mat or tray near your entrance. We recommend placing old towels underneath for extra protection. This gives guests an obvious spot to leave their muddy footwear.

Keep a basket of clean socks nearby for barefoot comfort indoors. Your guests will feel more relaxed knowing they can slip out of wet hiking boots immediately.

For emergency cleanup, stash these items in a small basket by the door:

  • Baby wipes for quick hand cleaning
  • Small hand towel
  • Spray bottle with water
  • Plastic bags for wet gear

A quick sweep and mop of your entryway takes just five minutes but makes a huge difference. Focus on visible dirt first, then give the floor a once-over with a damp mop to catch any lingering grit.

Wiping Away Coastal Dampness From Windows And Surfaces

Victoria’s coastal air leaves everything feeling slightly damp, especially after outdoor adventures. We tackle this by focusing on the surfaces your guests will touch and see most.

Start with windows since they show water spots and salt residue quickly. Use a simple solution of warm water and a splash of white vinegar. Wipe with newspaper or lint-free cloth for streak-free results.

cleaning a bright living room window

Coffee tables, countertops, and bathroom surfaces collect that coastal moisture too. A microfibre cloth with just warm water handles most situations perfectly.

Pay special attention to mirrors in bedrooms and bathrooms where guests will be freshening up. That foggy film disappears instantly with a quick wipe-down.

Don’t forget door handles, light switches, and cabinet pulls. These high-touch spots can feel sticky from humidity and salt air. A slightly damp cloth followed by a dry one leaves them feeling fresh and clean.

Run a dehumidifier if you have one, especially in guest bedrooms. It helps create that crisp, welcoming feeling that makes visitors want to settle in comfortably.

Maintaining A Clean And Healthy Home In Victoria’s Unique Climate

Victoria’s coastal weather brings constant moisture and muddy adventures that challenge even the tidiest homes. We’ve found that tackling rainy day messes quickly and managing pet hair from outdoor excursions makes all the difference in keeping our homes fresh and welcoming.

Managing Rainy Day Messes With Ease

Our coastal climate means we’re dealing with wet boots, dripping umbrellas, and muddy footprints from October through April. The key is creating simple systems that catch moisture before it spreads through our homes.

Place absorbent mats at every entrance. We recommend having at least two mats per door – one outside and one inside. Rubber-backed mats work best because they grip the floor and won’t slide around.

Keep a basket near the front door for wet shoes. This prevents water from pooling on hardwood or tile floors. We also suggest storing a few old towels nearby for quick cleanup of unexpected drips.

Set up a drying station in your mudroom or entryway. Install hooks at different heights for coats, umbrellas, and bags. A small boot tray underneath catches any remaining moisture.

For muddy paw prints and shoe marks, we mix equal parts white vinegar and warm water in a spray bottle. This solution cuts through dirt without leaving streaks on most floor types.

Keeping Pet Hair Under Control After Exploring Local Parks

Our furry friends love exploring Beacon Hill Park and the Dallas Road waterfront, but they bring half of Victoria’s outdoors back with them. We’ve learned that staying ahead of pet hair is much easier than letting it take over our homes.

Brush pets before they come inside after muddy park visits. This removes loose fur and debris while it’s still outside. Keep a towel by the door to wipe down wet paws and bellies.

We vacuum high-traffic areas every other day during shedding season. Pet hair loves to hide under furniture and in corners where coastal humidity makes it stick to surfaces.

Rubber gloves work wonders for removing pet hair from upholstery. Simply dampen the gloves slightly and run your hands over fabric surfaces. The hair will ball up and lift away easily.

For stubborn pet hair on carpets, we lightly mist the area with water from a spray bottle, then vacuum. The moisture helps loosen embedded fur that dry vacuuming might miss.

Victoria is full of quirky, unusual adventures that make everyday life feel special. And when you’re ready to come home, nothing feels better than walking into a clean, cozy space. Whether it’s a one-time deep clean after a busy weekend or regular visits to keep your home sparkling, Merry Maids of Victoria is here to help.

Molly Maid did a spectacular job of cleaning. They wiped the windows, lifted up the stove top, swept behind the fridge and scrubbed the washroom perfectly. Shower glass never looked as sparkling as it does now. The girls did a great job dusting the blinds.

Highly recommend for a deep cleaning, initially cleaning and any kind of dusting.

I just had my initial clean with Jayden from Merry Maids today. What great service! The place is immaculate and he took care to ask if there were any spots in particular I was concerned about and when I came up after he was done he talked me through everything he had done. Colleen and admin staff have been a delight to deal with also, a really well operated, ethical business that I'm happy to support. Looking forward to the ongoing service!

I cant go without mentioning the cutest little touch - my cat's mice were lined up in a row on her cat tree.. so cute! 7/5 stars, no notes.

There are a lot of options in this space in Victoria. I went with Merry Maids because they are a Living Wage employer. The team worked with me over several weeks to get alignment around expectations. I'm now happy with the services and the way my place looks. One of the things I appreciate the most is the quality of communication. That has exceeded expectations.

Merry Maids go above and beyond to keep their customers happy!

Melissa takes great care of us. We're starting to plan for retirement but both my husband and I agree we cannot possibly give up Merry Maids regardless of reduced income. I love that I don't have to shop for cleaning supplies and my vacuum has been in storage for years!

UPDATE: years after the above review we are still loyal customers (17years total)! We did give away our upright vacuum and just have a dustbuster now. Both retired and don't want to spoil it arguing about housework! Melissa has moved on but Sophie is just as lovely and knows how to find (and of course clean) all the dust, grease and dirt!
